If one of your GFCI outlets stops power flow under normal operating conditions, press the “reset” button to restore power. GFCIs are much more reliable than depending on the circuit breaker in your electrical panel to stop current flow. They are designed to cut off power flow before an electric shock can affect your heartbeat. Because of this important safety function, it is important to test all of the GFCI outlets in your home monthly. This article provides a simple guide to testing those outlets and keeping you and your family safe!

What Is a GFCI Outlet?

A ground fault circuit interrupter outlet (GFCI outlet) is a protective device specifically designed to break the circuit every time there is an imbalance between incoming and outgoing current. The GFCI outlet protects electrical wiring from overheating and possible fire, significantly minimizing the risk of shock injuries and fatal burns. It also detects ground faults and disrupts the current flow but should not be used to replace a fuse as it does not offer protection against short circuits and overloading.

4 Benefits of GCFI Outlet Installation

Electrical Shock Prevention

GFCI outlets are designed to monitor the flow of electricity. Inside the outlet is a sensor that can detect the smallest amount of electricity that flows along an unintended path. For example, suppose an electrical device is plugged into the GFCI outlet and comes in contact with water. In that case, the outlet will immediately shut off all power to that line of receptacles. A GFCI outlet can detect the smallest amount of changes in the electrical current, making them the perfect addition to your home.

Prevent Electrical Fires

GCFIs can prevent electrical fires. Over time, the wiring in your home can get old, and the insulation that holds everything together can begin to deteriorate. It’s no surprise that these damages can cause electrical currents to leak after a while. This electricity leakage can cause shock hazards and spark electrical fires in the home as well.

Stay Up to Code

GFCI outlets save thousands of lives each year. Accordingly, they are required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) in all new houses, especially near water sources. Going ahead with GFCI outlet installation is a relatively inexpensive and proactive way to ensure your family’s safety and protection.

Prevent Damages to Your Electrical Devices

Electricity leaks can cause your appliances to get damaged over a period of time. GFCI outlets work by transferring the same amount of power from the power source to the appliance, and back to the outlet on a continuous loop. If even the smallest amount of electricity leaks, the GFCI will trip itself cutting all power to the device for some reason. These leaks in the electrical current can be quite damaging to your appliances if it occurs constantly. GFCI receptacles help prevent these damages and have a higher life expectancy.

GCFI Outlet & Installation FAQ

HOW SHOULD OUTLETS BE INSTALLED IN A KITCHEN AREA?

All 15 and 20 receptacles installed within 6 feet of a kitchen sink or wetbar shall have GFCI protection. Receptacles in a kitchen used to serve countertops should be supplied with at least two 20 amp branch circuits, for small appliances. Each fixed appliance (refrigerator, stove, dishwasher) shall have its own dedicated circuit. On countertops 12 inches or wider a receptacle shall be installed so that there is no more than 24 inches between outlets. Receptacles outlets installed to serve island counter tops shall be installed above, or within 12 inches below the countertop. There shall be no more than 24 inches from centerline of countertop. No receptacle shall be installed face up on a sink countertop. (Source)

HOW MANY CONVENIENCE OUTLETS IN EACH ROOM SHOULD I HAVE?

In every kitchen, family room, dining room, living room, parlor, library, den, bedroom, or similar room or area of dwelling units, receptacle outlets shall be installed so that no point along the floor line in any wall space there is more than six feet, from an outlet in that space. This is to prevent the use of extension cords. Outlets are usually placed about 18 inches above floor level. Switches usually go about 48 inches from floor level. For convenience outlets, each single receptacle in a single branch circuit is usually figured for 1.5 amps and duplex outlets for three amps to estimate the total amperage for that circuit. Air conditioners should be on a single dedicated circuit.

WHAT IS AN AFCI?

The AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker will shut off a circuit in a fraction of a second if arcing develops. The current inside of an arc is not always high enough to trip a regular breaker. You must have noticed a cut or worn piece of a cord or a loose connection in a junction box or receptacle arcing and burnt without tripping the regular breaker.
